Prof. H.Weber, MD, FESC
Chairman of both the European Board for Accreditation in Cardiology and the UEMS Cardiology Section answers six questions about EBAC and CME

1. Why do we need EBAC?

The European Board for Accreditation in Cardiology is a joint initiative between the ESC and the UEMS-Cardiology Section, established in order to guarantee independence between evaluators and CME providers of high-level CME activities. EBAC quality criteria are based on those of EACCME, which is the European Accreditation Council for CME. EBAC is responsible for all European CME activities in cardiology, which are approved according to international standards.

2. Why CME?

Medical knowledge doubles approximately every 4 years. However, doctors improve their total medical knowledge only 10% during a 30-year term of clinical practice (knowledge acquired respectively: 60% in medical school, 30% during postgraduate training!). Therefore CME and CPD (Continuous Professional Development, which includes much more than clinical knowledge and skills), is not only an ethical obligation, but an utmost necessity. It allows cardiologists to treat patients with cardiovascular diseases according to the most recent recommendations and strategies. Despite the ethical obligation of CME for all European cardiologists, EBAC encourages at present voluntary participation in CME and CPD programmes.
